Immigrant Business Development Services

ISIS Business Services works to build a diverse business community. This team provides services and support to immigrants at all stages of business start-up and development through individual information sessions and referrals as well as training and networking opportunities. Business Services also creates links with the business community at large and promotes contributions of immigrants, while addressing the challenges which they encounter.

Our services for immigrant entrepreneurs include:

  • One-on-one business counselling
  • Visits to your business to provide support and address your issues or challenges
  • Workshops and seminars
  • Networking events, often with a showcase component
  • On-line Immigrant Business Directory - a promotional tool for your business
  • IBDS E-News, an electronic newsletter
  • English Language Support for IBDS Clients

Information and Referral
Our staff will meet with you individually and help you decide what you need to start your business. Staff will discuss your business idea with you and can suggest resources available in the community.

Staff can provide you with business information, answer questions, outline our programs and register you for business workshops or seminars, as well as to refer you to other business centres or service providers that are suited to your individual needs.

NEW! Step 1: Introduction to Business Start-up Online

ISIS is pleased to offer the Step 1: Introduction to Business Start-up Online Workshop each month for immigrants who want to start a business in Nova Scotia.

Cost: $10.00

Date: The Step 1 workshop starts the 1st day of each month but you can register for the workshop any time during the month.

You will have 2 weeks to complete this workshop, from the 1st of the month to the 14th of the month. For example, if you register for the Step 1 workshop on May 15th, you would start the online workshop on June 1st and complete it by June 14th.

Business Plan Made Easy

Enroll in the “Business Plan Made Easy” workshop with ISIS and receive step by step instruction and guidance to develop your business plan in a practical way. The sessions are 3 hours a week for six weeks and at the end of the seminar you will have worked your way through a completed business plan.  Workshop dates are: March 9, 16, 23, 30 and April 6 & 13, 2010.

This series of seminars focuses on how to send a message to your customers.

If you are interested in import/export, we offer Going Global Workshops, which provide information on international trade for immigrants who want to start a business as well as business owners.

Developing your Public Speaking Skills

Join Brenda Saunders Todd, Toastmaster’s Governor of the Year in 2008, professional public speaker and Certified Speakers Training Camp Instructor as she teaches the key things you need to do when communicating to your customer with a presentation. Topics include organizing a presentation quickly and effectively, creating an interesting presentation, using visual aids to enhance your message, speaking slowly for maximum clarity and dealing with nervousness.

One-on-one language clinics for clients starting a new business

What can the ESL instructor help me with?

This depends on your needs. The instructor can help you edit the English in your business plan, write letters to clients or suppliers, or prepare you for meetings, negotiations or telephone discussions. You will also learn about ESL resources in your community and on the Internet.

When can I make an appointment?

You can schedule a 1-hour appointment on Wednesday afternoons or Thursday mornings.
