SupperNOVA

Another Successful Potluck Event!
The SupperNOVA multi-cultural potluck on April 2 united local and newcomer community members for another successful welcoming event. There were nearly 300 community members in attendance. Some were newcomers representing many countries, and some were Canadian-born representing many neighborhoods. All of whom had a chance to mingle, socialize and share stories.
Food brings people together, and thanks to our generous invitees, there was a wide variety of delicious, home-made ethnic dishes. The children were entertained by Frontier College who brought games and books and face painters to make the event more colourful and fun for community members of all ages. Two local performers provided music for the evening: Roberta Phillips, an ISIS volunteer, and WIEBO, a local band. Roberta has been a Djembe performer and instructor since 2000. She studied under the direction of Muhtadi Thomas (Muhtadi & the World Drummers, Toronto), Fano Soro (Vancouver) and several other master drummers. She loves to share Djembe rhythms and her passion for drumming, and the room was filled with her beats and applause from the audience. Fresh on the Halifax music scene, bringing sincere lyrics, organic rhythms and fierce harmonies are WEIBO, the folk-rock child of singer/songwriter Kevin An-Jager, vocalist Nicole Mitchell and Vocalist/Percussionist Laura Spaetzel. Along with sharing their lovely rhythms, they also shared beautiful stories. Their music and their harmonic presence was enjoyed by all.
Thanks to the Volunteers
A heartfelt thank you goes out to each of our hard working Volunteers/Magic Makers. Their enthusiasm and group energy was amazing – it made the evening a success and enjoyable to all. Thank you for your support, for asking your family and friends to help, for welcoming newcomers, for working so well with each other, for supporting diversity and inclusion, and, last but not least, for building our community.
