Volunteer With Us
Volunteering at ISIS is a rewarding experience for all. We have over 600 dedicated volunteers working in a variety of programs, all of which are essential to the settlement process for immigrants.
By volunteering with ISIS you become part of a team of people working to make life in Canada just a little bit easier for immigrants to Nova Scotia.
Here are just some of the ways volunteers contribute to ISIS programs:
Ongoing OpportunitiesCommunity Volunteer (individual, family to family and 55+ matches)
- We match you with an immigrant and you meet weekly to offer support during their settlement process
- Participate in social, cultural and recreation activities with the wider community

ESL Tutors
- We match you with an immigrant to help them with English, for example, literacy, listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and pronunciation skills
- Assist learners with preparation for Canadian citizenship exams, taxi or truck driver’s exams and other professional tests
- You do not need prior English teaching experience – we provide ongoing training and support

Professional Mentors
- We match established professionals with immigrant professionals in their field to provide learning and networking opportunities
- You provide informal advice, practice profession specific language and offer moral support

Practice Interviewers
- Employers volunteer their time to interview an immigrant professional in their field of work, preparing them for a job interview
- Conduct face to face or telephone interviews, and share skills and expertise

Classroom Assistant
- Work with English students under the supervision of an instructor
- Assist with literacy and numeracy activities
Computer Lab Assistant
- Assist the Computer Skills Trainer in teaching basic to advanced level computer courses.
- For people who are knowledgeable in MS Office or in specific programs such as AutoCAD, Photoshop and Simply Accounting.
Front Desk Assistant
- Greet clients as they arrive at ISIS
- Assist with photocopying and update materials in the reception area
Special Events Volunteers
- Help with events such as community BBQs and SupperNOVA
- New opportunities on a regular basis
Diversity Facilitators
- Deliver workshops and presentations on diversity and intercultural understanding for various organizations and agencies
- Attend two full days of training and continued learning sessions throughout the year
